Andreas Antonius Maria (Dries) van Agt was born in Geldrop on 2 February 1929. He was educated in Eindhoven and read law at the University of Nijmegen.

Following his graduation in 1955, he went into legal practice in Eindhoven. In 1957, however, he joined the Legal Affairs and Industrial Organisation Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, moving in 1962 to the Public Law Legislation Division of the Ministry of Justice.

From 1968 to 1971 Dries van Agt was professor of criminal law and criminal procedure at the University of Nijmegen. From 6 July 1971 to 11 May 1973 he served on behalf of the Catholic Peoples Party (KVP) as Minister of Justice in the Biesheuvel government. This was followed by a term as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice in the Den Uyl government.

From 19 December 1977 to 4 November 1982 Mr Van Agt was Prime Minister and Minister of General Affairs in three successive administrations.

From 1982 to 1983 he represented the Christian Democratic Alliance (CDA) as a member of the Lower House, before leaving Parliament to become for the next four years Queens Commissioner for the province of North Brabant. Thereafter he served for two years as the European Community's representative in Japan and then for a further six in the United States.

He returned to Japan in 1995-1996 as visiting professor of international relations at the University of Kyoto.
