Den Uyl government
(1973 - 1977)
Johannes Marten (Joop) den Uyl was born in Hilversum on 9 August 1919.
Following his secondary education in Hilversum, he took a degree in
economics at the University of Amsterdam, graduating in 1942. His first job
was at the Ministry of Economic Affairs. In 1945 he joined the editorial
team of the daily paper Het Parool and went on in the same year to become
editor of the weekly paper Vrij Nederland. Between 1949 and 1962 he was
director of the Dr Wiardi Beckman Institute, the research institute of the
Labour Party (PvdA).
From 1953 to 1965 Joop den Uyl served as a PvdA member of the Amsterdam
Municipal Council, becoming an alderman in 1962. Between 1956 and 1963 he
was a member of the Lower House of Parliament. From 14 April 1965 to 22
November 1966 he was Minister of Economic Affairs in the Cals
administration. In 1967 he returned to the Lower House as leader of the
parliamentary Labour Party (PvdA).
From 11 May 1973 to 19 December 1977, Joop den Uyl was Prime Minister and
Minister of General Affairs in the government that bore his name.
Between 1977 and 1981 he was once again leader of the parliamentary Labour
Party and in 1980 he became chairman of the Confederation of the Socialist
Parties of the European Community.
From 11 September 1981 to 29 May 1982 Mr Den Uyl was Deputy Prime Minister
and Minister of Social Affairs and Employment in the second Van Agt
administration. As Deputy Prime Minister, he was also responsible for
matters concerning the Netherlands Antilles.
In 1982 Joop den Uyl returned to the Lower House, where he led the
parliamentary Labour Party until 1986. In 1985 he received an honorary
doctorate from his alma mater, the University of Amsterdam.
He died in Amsterdam on 24 December 1987.
